Leak Detection – Its Time To DIY
Taking pride in your home is important, but have you ever considered the damage that might be done if you ignore certain elements? One area that is often neglected is leak detection, because people don’t know how to do it or don’t know what they’re looking for, but now would be a good time to familiarise yourself with it.
The problem with leaking is that it is easily undetected, until of course you find your home flooded. After all, unless you’re looking at a particular area you’re unlikely to notice it, but it is important that you make yourself aware of the ‘ins and outs’ of your home so you can be up to speed with leak detection. A small leak, once detected, can be resolved quickly, but larger leaks that have been present for some time can cause hefty damage to the property. Many do not realise just how bad water damage can be and that’s why leak detection is so important.

•Check your taps – have a look around the home and see if there is any dripping. Even a slight drip can develop into something larger if not properly monitored. As well as checking the taps, always look underneath the sinks and see if there is any damp there, and if there is, you could have a problem.
•Are your valves closed? – it is essential maintenance to check the pipe valves and ensure they are closed properly and tight, as this will reduce the risk of leaking.
•How old are the pipes? – with so many home appliances its easy to forget how old your pipes are, but the older ones are much more prone to problems so be sure to check them. Leak detection starts with the most basic of homeowner checks.
A good tip is to monitor a suspect leak area closely by making sure you place a dry cloth underneath and then checking it after 48 hours; damp would indicate a leak problem. If there has been some leaking, contact your plumber and don’t delay!
