How To Protect Your Allergic Children
It can be hard to know what to do when you find out that you have allergic children. You hardly know what questions to ask, and it can be hard knowing what exactly you need to do to take the best possible care of your child. You might even wonder how this happened, and how you're going to be able to protect your child, especially if they have a severe food allergy. Before you panic, take a deep breath and calm down. There are some simple steps you can take to make certain your allergic children are safe and healthy.
The first thing a parent of allergic children needs to do is to take a look at their kitchen. Any food that your child may be allergic to must be removed, especially if your child has a severe reaction - such as children who are allergic to peanuts. Even if there are no peanuts in the house, you should take a look at the ingredients in cereal, cake and bread mixes, and snack foods to make certain no peanut oil is an ingredient. While it will make going to the store last a little longer, it's not much of a sacrifice to protect your allergic children.
If your Allergic Children are in school or daycare, it is vital that you have an action plan. This tells teachers, daycare providers, babysitters, and any other caretakers what to do in case of an accidental exposure. For every one's peace of mind, have this plan printed up and put in an easily accessible spot, such as on the fridge or in a drawer. If you do put your plan in a drawer in the kitchen, you can put an Epi-pen or pre measured dose of Benadryl in the same drawer.
Remember to include your friends and family on your plans to take care of your allergic children. The more people who know what to do in case of an emergency, and are aware of what foods may be dangerous to your child, the less chance there will be of accidental exposure. If you are traveling for the holidays or on vacation, don't be afraid to tell restaurants about your child's needs and restrictions. Many times they will have alternatives for your child's meal.
Allergic children should be attended immediately. If you are a parent of one, make sure you know the common allergies symptoms and treatments.
