Depression in Children

Depression afflicts millions of individuals every day and that includes children. Perhaps, most people do not see this fact because children are commonly seen as leading stress-free lives since all they have to do is study, eat, and play. This is a wrong perception since a child's life can also be very stressful that can cause depression in many children around the world.

Temper Tantrum and ADHD

Usually, adults believe that "temper tantrums" are common for children especially when they do not get what they want. Other children cries a lot most especially those who have very sensitive personalities. Some children display disruptive behavior as a result to their curiosity and playfulness. This behavior is usual among children from all around the world.

The difference lies when certain behaviors such as persistent sadness or repetitive occurrence of disruptive behavior is demonstrated most of the time. Disputed school work and socialization with playmates can be an outcome of this behavior. Children who constantly hit playmates for no reason are suspected in having depression. There is also a probability that such behavior can be an underlying sign of ADHD.

Children's Coping Mechanisms are Different from Adults

Children behave differently because compared to adults, they do not have a well-developed defense mechanism. Children exhibit behavior as it is, cry when sad or shout when angry. Thus, it is important for parents to give extra attention to this behavior to see if the child is already into depression.

Some children are vocal about what they think, some are not, and some seek answers to their moods from an adult. Children naturally get depressed when a loved one dies. Children can also affected to unexpected changes such as transferring to a new school or neighborhood. Parents must support their children in adjusting to life's changes.A child can get depressed when his or her parents are getting divorced. Sometimes children respond to these situations violently, some hide what they feel and display behaviors of irrational anger.

Adults Play an Important Role

Parents should be conscious in the changes of their child's behavior since kids commonly have a routine.Depression in children can be distinguished by the following signs: changes in eating habits, withdrawal from play sessions, changing sleep patterns, unexplained irritability, inability to execute playtime tasks, poor concentration, sudden fatigue, and etc. If a child is depressed, parents and adults should seek suddenprofessional help.
