HDTV – Coming Soon in Glorious 3D
It wasn't too long ago when High Definition TV was unveiled to the world. all of a sudden, the numbers 720 and 1080 were everywhere and i recall wondering just how they were going to improve my entertainment. Being the type of guy that needs the latest gadget, I was an early adopter of this new technology, buying a huge HD ready TV and two high definition games consoles in one bank busting shopping spree.
Viewing HD content for the first time is an amazing experience. I bought a HD DVD boxset of a well known BBC nature series to test out my new system and i was simply blown away. The clarity compared to what we have happily put up with until now was astonishing. Playing HD games on my new consoles delighted my even more!
Now we all know that by the time we are introduced to a new technology, there is always the next technology already well under development but what could this be? My childhood dream of 'Smellyvision' perhaps or something more space-age like holographic tv? Well i was definitely sniffing round the right tree, well not with the smellyvision. That's right people, the next tv technology is none other than 3D HDTV!
The first time i heard about 3D HDTV, one burning question was hot on my lips - will we all have to wear those ridiculous 3D specs? The ones with one red lens and one green? Surely we have moved on? Nope.
The bad news is the stupid looking glasses remain; at least they do in the 3DHDTVs due to hit the market first. The good news - well, they dont look quite as stupid as the traditional 3d specs we are accustomed to. Still taking on a rather boxy and bulky appearance, which i imagine is for longevitys sake, the images i have seen floating around the interwebs depict a half-hearted attempt at making the 3d specs more of a fashion piece, which i will class as a fail at this stage of proceedings.
Panasonic are the driving force behind 3DHDTV and they claim that they will have both a 3DHDTV and Bluray player available for purchase in 2010 " both capable of serving full 1080p high definition content in glorious 3D to your tech hungry eyes " provided you and your viewing partners don a pair of the previously mentioned and not yet fashionable active shutter specs. Look on the bright side " if the program you are watching is rubbish, you can have hours of fun ridiculing friends and family for looking idiotic instead. Every cloud......
The next frontier in viewing entertainment is sitting on a sofa just around the corner but for now i guess well just have to make- do with boring old high-definition television "I might start watching with my sunglasses on, you know, just to ready myself for the future....
